How Breas Medical Runs Global Contracting with a Three-Person Legal Team Using Aline

AI-powered contract drafting, redlining, and management for Breas' lean legal team.

Breas Medical is a global respiratory care company with operations in 35+ countries. Running legal for a business that size usually means a large department, but at Breas the entire contracting function sits with a three-person team: a General Counsel, a paralegal, and a data privacy officer.

Before Aline, Breas had cycled through two other contract lifecycle management platforms. The first never made it past implementation. The second, a well known leader in the space, worked well as a repository, but predated the current wave of AI tooling and was difficult to implement and difficult to work with day to day. As deal flow grew, the team needed something that could actually help them draft and negotiate, not just store documents.

Challenge

“I had bounced around to a couple different contract lifecycle management platforms. One was a failed implementation; I never got anywhere with it. The next one, is a good solution, but AI hadn’t hit yet. It was behind the times. I knew there had to be something better with native AI.” — Michael Mullane, General Counsel, Breas Medical

Breas moved their contracting onto Aline roughly a year ago. The three-person team uses the platform as a full ecosystem: a contract repository, an AI assistant for drafting and redlining, and a reporting layer. Their existing e-signature tool still handles signing, and executed documents route automatically through the API into Aline’s contract database, so nothing falls through the cracks.

The AI drafting and redlining features are what unlock capacity for a team this size. Mike can hand work to team members who understand a business concept but aren’t trained to redline legal language, and Aline does the legal drafting for them. Need an agreement redlined to favor the recipient? It takes a fraction of the time it used to.

Solution

“When I had the experience with Aline, it was game change. You can quote me on that. I’m the General Counsel here at Breas. I manage contracting, everything globally, for a company that operates in 35+ countries. I’ve got a paralegal and a data privacy officer. All three of us have an account. People can learn it like that. It’s easy to integrate, lock in, manage the contracts, use the AI assistant tools to draft things and edit it.” — Michael Mullane

With Aline, Breas can handle more deal flow without adding headcount. The AI does the first pass on drafting and redlining, and the team reviews and finishes the work. For a lean legal department supporting a global business, that efficiency turns directly into budget justification.

Results

“The idea is that the AI functionality drives efficiency. And what does efficiency drive? Lower cost, lower headcount. So I can justify it. Companies are cutting right now. I don’t need additional headcount despite having more deal flow, because the tool allows me to be that much more effective.” — Michael Mullane

The speed shows up in day-to-day work. A first pass on an agreement that used to take an afternoon to redline is done in a fraction of that time. For a team managing contracts across 35+ countries, those small gains compound fast.

“I feel like I have a great product at a great price point.”

— Michael Mullane
